Abstract

Background: Pathological vaginal discharge, known as leukorrhea, is a significant reproductive health issue among adolescents, often associated with poor hygiene practices.

Purpose: This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of menstrual hygiene education, specifically regarding the proper use of sanitary pads, on the incidence of leukorrhea among female high school students in West Lombok, Indonesia.

Methods: A quantitative approach was employed, utilising a quasi-experimental one-group pre- and post-test design. The research was conducted at SMAN 2 Gerung and involved a sample of 66 female students selected through total sampling. Data were collected before and after the educational intervention and analysed to determine significant changes in leukorrhea symptoms.

Results: The intervention led to a significant reduction in the prevalence of pathological leukorrhea. At baseline, 19.7% (n=13) of respondents reported experiencing abnormal vaginal discharge. After the health education intervention, the prevalence of abnormal cases decreased to 4.5% (n=3), while the rate of normal physiological discharge increased to 95.5%. Statistical analysis confirmed the significance of this reduction (p-value = 0.002; p < 0.05).

Conclusion: Menstrual hygiene education significantly enhances knowledge and reduces the incidence of abnormal leukorrhea among female adolescents. It is recommended to integrate reproductive health education into regular school health programs (UKS) to ensure sustainable health outcomes for students.
