Abstract

Background: Japanese animation (anime) has grown into a global phenomenon, significantly impacting adolescent culture, including in Indonesia. Beyond mere entertainment, anime consumption plays a role in self-expression, lifestyle choices, and the formation of adolescent identity.

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between anime viewing habits and self-concept among members of a youth community in Mataram City, Indonesia.

Methods: We employed a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional correlational design. A total sampling technique was used to recruit 70 respondents from the "Anime no Sekai" youth community. Data were collected using validated questionnaires that assessed anime viewing habits and various dimensions of self-concept, including self-esteem, body image, self-ideal, roles, and personal identity. The data were analysed using the Spearman Rank correlation test.

Results: The findings indicated that the majority of respondents (79%) reported a high frequency of anime viewing, while 69% showed a moderate level of self-concept. Statistical analysis revealed a significant, albeit weak, positive correlation between anime viewing habits and adolescent self-concept (p = 0.004; r = 0.344).

Conclusion: A statistically significant relationship exists between Japanese animation consumption and self-concept formation among the youth group studied.

Implications: These findings suggest that parents, educators, and community health nurses should actively guide adolescents to balance their media consumption with activities that promote a positive and healthy self-concept.
