Chronic Energy Deficiency (CED) among pregnant women is a significant nutritional issue that increases the risk of pregnancy and childbirth complications, as well as low birth weight. Data from the Penimbung Community Health Center show that Gelangsar Village has the highest number of CED cases among pregnant women in its service area. Sustainable prevention requires empowering community health volunteers (Posyandu cadres) and promoting the use of nutrient-rich local foods. This community service program aimed to strengthen the capacity of Posyandu cadres to prevent CED among pregnant women through the GADIS JAGOAN Program ( Movement to Support Pregnant Women in Consuming Nutrient-Rich Local Food Products).
The program used health education sessions, interactive discussions, demonstrations of nutrient-rich local food processing, and mentoring to help Posyandu cadres provide nutrition education to pregnant women and their families. The target participants were Posyandu cadres in the Gelangsar Village Health Post (Poskesdes) area. Program evaluation involved assessing cadres’ knowledge before and after the intervention and observing their skills in delivering nutrition education.
The results showed improved knowledge and skills among cadres regarding CED, maternal nutrition during pregnancy, and the use of local foods as nutritional sources. Cadres provided more effective education and support to pregnant women and actively promoted the consumption of nutritious local foods in the community. The GADIS JAGOAN Program also increased family involvement in supporting pregnant women's nutritional needs.
This program can serve as an effective cadre-based community empowerment model for preventing CED among pregnant women. The use of locally available, affordable, and nutrient-dense food resources can support the sustainability of programs aimed at improving the nutritional status of pregnant women in the community.
