The prevalence of chronic diseases, such as hypertension in the elderly, tends to increase. According to data from the World Health Organisation (WHO), approximately 1.28 billion adults aged 30 to 79 globally are affected by hypertension, and this number is projected to rise further if left unmanaged. Effective management of hypertension involves both pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches. This community service project focused on one specific non-pharmacological intervention for pain reduction in individuals with hypertension: finger-holding relaxation therapy.
This initiative aimed to raise public awareness regarding the effectiveness of finger-holding relaxation therapy in alleviating pain among older adults with hypertension. The methods employed in this community service included educational sessions and demonstrations of finger-holding relaxation therapy, blood pressure measurements taken with a digital sphygmomanometer, and recording pain responses on a documentation sheet. Participants included older adults with hypertension who experienced pain.
The results of this community service project indicated that finger-holding relaxation therapy significantly reduced pain levels in older adults with hypertension. In conclusion, finger-holding relaxation therapy is a simple yet effective non-pharmacological intervention for alleviating pain in this demographic, ultimately enhancing their quality of life.
